i'm looking for more power so that i can land a knockout punch. i'm training in kick boxing so i want to be able to hit hard and land a devastating punch i.e. Mike Tyson type power. I have reasonably well sized legs and they grow well when i train them, and i know power comes from legs, but are there any exercises for the upper body that i can use to increase my punching power also.|||There is nothing wrong with strength training but it is technique you really want to focus on to allow you to bring that power to bear on your target. I don't know if you are in the UK or not but if you are I would reccommend you look up any of Geoff Thompsons senior level instructors (eg Al Peasland, Matty Evans ect) in the British Combat Association. Those guys can generate some scary power in their punches. Other than that maybe try a good boxing gym for a while. I know you are into kick boxing but pure boxers may well have the specialism you need.|||It's great that you do kickboxing and know that power comes from your legs. However it also comes from your upper body so i would suggest that you pump weights focusing on your upper body. I don't know your physique but if you're lean it would be very wise to do so. You can also do resistance training with extra weight attached to your upper body when smacking the bag. If you do a lot of resistance training, once the extra weight comes off, you'll notice a drastic increase to your speed and power.
I hope this helps mate!|||Personally I feel punching power comes from attitude almost as much as technique. If you throw your punches with ferocity and a willingness to eat a punch to land a punch you will generate more power. Watch old fights of Rocky Marciano for example.
Marciano used a 300lb heavy bag and his punches could break bones. Use the heaviest bag gloves you can find and throw your punches with the intention of punching through the bag not at it. Imagine you are a spring uncoiling from your legs then trunk then shoulder then your arm. Punch as hard as possible while maintaining technique and fighting stance. Don't tense up and try to punch hard, stay loose and try to punch fast|||my friend, technique is the most important thing. Look at the little thai guys that can hit you with punches harder than a moving car. Look at diagrams of the head and weak spots and learn them. very important also is to relax. If you tense to try and be strong your wasting your energy on tensing rather than punching power. It's not hard to knock someone out you just need to know their weak spots and practice technique. muscle growth can help but it makes you slow to and still will not perfect your punch.|||Small jabs with the heavy bag and as hard as you can. Try to not move the bag. The more you can keep that bag still the better your punch is getting. Weight lifting and getting some power in your arms will help too.|||Just work on your technique while punching a heavy bag|||knuckledusters?
